Wildfires kill firefighters across southern Europe as heat records fall

Wildfires ravaged southern Europe on Wednesday, killing three firefighters and forcing thousands of people to evacuate as extreme heat and dry conditions fuelled blazes across Sicily, southwestern France and central Spain, according to France 24. Rescue teams battled dozens of fires amid warnings over increasingly severe weather events. The fires came as large parts of southern Europe continued to endure record-breaking temperatures, following France's June heatwave that claimed more than 5,700 excess deaths, the Guardian reported.

Scientists agree that climate change caused by humans burning fossil fuels is making extreme weather events such as wildfires increasingly severe, according to Le Monde. The scale and intensity of the blazes underscore the accelerating threat to Mediterranean regions as summer temperatures climb. Southern Italy, including Sicily and Calabria, faces particular vulnerability given the region's dry summers and ageing infrastructure for fire response.
