Wildfires force evacuations across northern Italy as heat crisis intensifies

Tens of thousands of residents and tourists have been ordered to evacuate as wildfires tore through France, Spain and Italy on Thursday and Friday, according to Deutsche Welle and CBS News. The blazes, fanned by record-breaking temperatures and strong winds, have killed several firefighters and forced holiday destinations to empty. France's President Emmanuel Macron invoked the EU's civil protection mechanism to request international assistance, signalling the scale of the crisis.

The fires follow France's June heatwave, which the Guardian reported killed more than 5,700 people in excess deaths alone. Southern Europe has endured successive waves of extreme temperatures this summer, with the heat now advancing northward into the Alps and northeastern regions. Italy's northeastern border areas, including Friuli-Venezia Giulia, lie in the path of this expanding climate crisis, though the fires themselves have so far been concentrated in the south and central regions.

The evacuation of tens of thousands underscores the vulnerability of Europe's summer economy and labour force to climate extremes. The scale of firefighter casualties and the need for cross-border EU assistance suggest that individual national responses are insufficient for the scale of the crisis. As heat records continue to fall across the continent, the northeastern regions face mounting pressure on water supplies, agriculture, and tourism infrastructure in the weeks ahead.
