Heatwave deepens water crisis in Sardinia's pastoral interior

The heatwave sweeping Europe this week has pushed temperatures to record levels across Germany, Italy and beyond, with the World Health Organisation reporting more than 1,300 excess deaths since June 21. For Sardinia, the immediate danger of extreme heat is compounded by a longer crisis: the island's interior, already stressed by depopulation and economic fragility, now faces critical water shortage as aquifers decline and rainfall remains sparse.

Sardinia's pastoral heartland—the Barbagia, Nuorese and surrounding regions—depends on groundwater for livestock, crops and household use. The combination of this summer's record temperatures and the broader Mediterranean drought pattern documented in recent months has accelerated depletion of water supplies that sustain shepherding and small-scale agriculture. Unlike the irrigated Po Valley in the north, which has dominated headlines for its drought crisis, Sardinia's interior has received less international attention despite facing similar or worse stress.

The Guardian reported Saturday that Germany and Italy are sweltering in the heatwave as records tumble across Europe, with the weather system spreading eastward. For island communities dependent on stored water and wells, the risk is not only immediate heat stress on livestock and workers but also the depletion of reserves that typically sustain the dry months ahead. Shepherds in the interior have begun moving herds earlier than usual, a sign of acute water scarcity.
