Russian attacks on Danube, Black Sea shipping test Central Europe's trade arteries

Russian attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea and the Danube Delta have struck two merchant vessels within a week, maritime security outlets report, raising questions about the resilience of Central Europe's traditional trade corridors and potentially redirecting cargo flows toward Adriatic hubs such as Trieste.

According to Seatrade Maritime News, the general cargo vessel Golden Leo sank after being hit by Russian missiles on 19 July. The ship went down in the Black Sea, the outlet reported on 27 July, without specifying the exact location of the sinking or the fate of its crew. The Maritime Executive separately reported that the 3,400 dwt Turkish-operated freighter AGN Ragnar was struck by Russian drones on Saturday 25 July while outbound through the Bystre Channel at the northern branch of the Danube. Two crew members remain missing, the outlet said.
