Pompeii restorers piece together rare ceiling from a thousand fragments

The New York Times reported Friday that archaeologists at Pompeii have restored a rare ceiling by collecting and assembling about 1,000 fragments scattered across a Roman dwelling buried by Vesuvius nearly two millennia ago. The restored scene depicts the mythological love story of Dionysus and Ariadne, a subject that held particular appeal for wealthy Roman householders and offered a window into the artistic sensibilities of the first century CE.

The restoration work, conducted at the archaeological site near Naples, represents the kind of meticulous conservation that has become a hallmark of recent Pompeii scholarship. Each fragment had to be identified, cleaned and positioned correctly to reconstruct the original composition—a process that demands both technical skill and intimate knowledge of Roman fresco technique and mythological iconography.
