PSA expands Italian intermodal footprint with Padua terminal

PSA, Logtainer and Interporto Padova have signed an agreement to establish PSA Padova, a new company tasked with managing and developing Padua's intermodal terminal in the Veneto region. According to Seatrade Maritime News, the joint venture represents a strategic expansion for the Singapore-headquartered operator into Italy's inland logistics network, where road, rail and container services converge.

The move reflects a broader shift in European supply-chain architecture. Rather than concentrating container traffic at coastal ports like Genoa, major operators are now investing in intermodal hubs further inland, where rail connections and truck networks can distribute cargo more efficiently across northern Europe and toward the Mediterranean.

For Liguria, the development carries mixed implications. Genoa remains Italy's largest container port and a critical gateway for Asian trade, but the expansion of competing inland terminals in Padua and elsewhere in the northeast signals that shippers are diversifying routing options. The Port Authority of Genoa has long argued for investment in its own rail and truck connections to remain competitive; Padua's modernisation underscores that pressure.
