Northern Italy's rivers reach critical drought levels as summer intensifies

Several waterways in northern Italy are in a "critical state" due to drought, according to the Po River Authority (ADBPO) on Friday, July 3. The Local Italy reported that the Po River Authority issued the warning as weather forecasts offered little relief from dry conditions. Veneto, Italy's northeastern region, declared a state of emergency on Thursday after recording more than 25 per cent less rainfall from January to May compared with 2025, according to regional authorities quoted by The Local Italy. The drought is affecting agricultural output, hydroelectric generation, and freshwater supplies across Piemonte and neighbouring regions.

The drought extends beyond the Po basin. The Local Italy reported that Veneto's declaration of emergency underscores the scale of water stress across the Po River system, which serves as the primary freshwater source for northern Italy's industrial and agricultural heartland. Piemonte, which depends on Alpine snowmelt and seasonal precipitation to sustain the Po's flow, faces compounding challenges: reduced winter snowpack, lower spring runoff, and persistent summer heat. These conditions have precedent; in 2022, the Po reached historic low levels, forcing restrictions on irrigation and hydroelectric output. The current drought, while not yet at 2022 levels, signals a pattern of increasing water stress in a region already vulnerable to climate variability.
