Mont Blanc tunnel closure strands cross-border commerce as repair work extends

The Mont Blanc tunnel, which carries the bulk of freight traffic between the Valle d'Aosta and the Haute-Savoie region of France, entered its third week of closure on Monday as authorities extended repair work beyond the originally scheduled completion date. French and Italian officials cited safety concerns in tunnel infrastructure as the reason for the delay, though neither government has released detailed technical assessments. Dairy producers, construction firms and small manufacturers that rely on just-in-time supply chains have begun reporting delays and cost overruns. Agence France-Presse quoted transport operators in the region saying that rerouting via alternative passes is not viable for all cargo types, particularly refrigerated goods destined for French supermarkets.
