Record heat returns to Italy as Molise braces for summer stress

After a brief respite, sweltering heat is set to return to Italy from Wednesday, forecasters warned Tuesday, according to The Local Italy. The new heatwave arrives as Europe continues to reckon with one of the worst episodes on record: a powerful surge in late June that experts say ranks among the most severe ever recorded, rivalling even the catastrophic 2003 heatwave.

In Molise, where agriculture remains the backbone of a shrinking rural economy, the timing compounds an existing crisis. The Po Valley rice belt has already been ravaged by early drought this summer, with weeds overtaking parched paddies in Pavia province as farmers across northern Italy's most productive region scramble for irrigation solutions. The southern interior, where Molise's grain and vegetable crops depend on increasingly erratic rainfall, faces similar pressure as temperatures climb.

The region's small farming operations—already struggling with emigration of younger workers and fragmented landholdings—have little buffer against sustained heat stress. Unlike the mechanised, well-capitalised farms of the north, Molise's agricultural base relies on traditional methods and modest infrastructure, making it acutely vulnerable to the compounding shocks of drought and extreme temperature swings that the forecasts now predict will dominate the summer ahead.
