Italy suspends Schengen with Spain as Ceuta migrant crisis deepens

Italy has temporarily suspended the Schengen agreement with Spain, a move that will impact people travelling by plane or boat between the two countries, according to The Guardian and The Local Italy. The decision follows the influx of tens of thousands of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa, which borders Morocco.

The Italian government's announcement came on Friday, as Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, visited Ceuta and decried a 'violation of territorial integrity' after as many as 50,000 migrants entered the tiny territory, with at least 57 people reported dead. The measure is part of a broader European response, with France also tightening border checks and increasing police numbers at its Spanish border.

The suspension reflects a deepening crisis for the European Union, which is grappling with one of its largest migrant movements in recent years. A majority of EU countries have called for emergency talks on the sudden inflow, according to The Local Italy.
