Italy's heatwave fractures as 14 regions brace for severe storms

Forecasters have signalled an abrupt shift in Italy's weather pattern, with the scorching heat that has gripped the peninsula for weeks giving way to a severe storm system affecting nearly a third of the country's regions. The Local Italy reported that most of Italy will experience violent weather before temperatures finally fall, creating a compressed window of acute risk for infrastructure, agriculture, and coastal communities already stressed by the extended heat.

For Liguria, the timing compounds existing vulnerabilities. The region's steep terrain, narrow valleys, and aging drainage infrastructure make it particularly susceptible to flash flooding and landslides when heavy precipitation arrives suddenly after prolonged drought. The Port of Genoa, already managing heat-related operational challenges and reduced river water availability from the Po basin upstream, now faces the prospect of storm surge and water management complications during the critical July shipping season.
