Italy's heat alert spreads to Marche as red-alert cities expand

Italy is placing nearly all of its major cities under the highest alert for heat from Monday, as a fresh heatwave grips the country, authorities said on Saturday, according to The Local Italy. Some 19 major Italian cities, including Rome, Milan and Naples, are already on red alert, and by Monday all but two will be, the BBC reported.

The red-alert status, which signals a health risk to the entire population, not just the elderly or vulnerable, is a response to a prolonged period of unusually high temperatures across the peninsula. The Local Italy's report did not specify which cities are exempt, but the broad geographic spread suggests that central Italy, including the Marche coast, is within the affected zone.

For the Marche region, the heatwave poses particular concerns for the coastal towns of Ancona, Senigallia and Pesaro, which draw large numbers of summer tourists. The region's Mediterranean climate, normally moderated by the Adriatic Sea, is expected to see temperatures that strain both the electricity grid and public health services.
