A record-breaking heatwave has tightened its grip across Italy and the Balkans, killing hundreds of people and driving excess deaths across Europe, according to Al Jazeera reporting on Monday. The World Health Organisation reported over 1,300 excess deaths across Europe since June 21, with older people remaining most at risk. Italian authorities placed 22 cities under red heat warnings on Monday as the weather system spreads eastward across the continent, according to The Guardian.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia sits directly in the path of this eastward-moving system, a position that compounds existing vulnerabilities in the region. The northeastern region has Italy's oldest demographic profile outside the South; its population of 1.2 million skews heavily toward retirement age, making excess heat mortality a particular concern. The region's industrial base—particularly the Port of Trieste and its supporting energy infrastructure—faces additional strain from sustained high temperatures. Earlier heatwaves this summer have already tested Piedmont's industrial power grid and Alpine hydropower capacity, a pattern now repeating as the system advances eastward.
The bora wind, which normally moderates summer temperatures in the region, has failed to provide relief during this extended event. Coastal areas from Monfalcone to Muggia typically benefit from maritime cooling, but the unusual intensity of this heatwave has overwhelmed those natural advantages. Inland valleys, particularly around Udine and Gorizia, have recorded temperatures approaching those of central Italy, a departure from historical norms that local health services say they are unprepared to manage at scale.
