The region's continental inland climate and Mediterranean coast face heightened wildfire risk, particularly in the forested areas of the Julian Alps. The Balkans and Central European hinterland—the region's traditional economic and cultural sphere—are experiencing similar extremes, potentially disrupting cross-border trade and transport networks that depend on stable infrastructure. Elderly populations in the region's smaller towns and rural areas, already facing demographic challenges, remain most vulnerable to prolonged heat stress.
