Italy bakes under fourth heatwave as Venice faces peak-season test

Italy is bracing for its fourth heatwave of the summer, with forecasters warning of red alerts and temperatures reaching 41C in parts of the country, according to The Local Italy. The hot spell, expected to begin on Wednesday and stretch through the Ferragosto holiday in mid-August, marks the most sustained extreme heat event yet this season.

For Venice, the timing is particularly significant. The city is now in the heart of its peak tourist season, when daily visitor numbers regularly exceed 100,000 on the busiest days. The heatwave adds pressure to a destination already grappling with over-tourism, as prolonged high temperatures can make outdoor sightseeing uncomfortable and strain public services such as water supply and health facilities.

The Italian government's heat health warning system is expected to raise the alert level in several regions, including Veneto, where cities such as Venice, Padua and Verona are forecast to see temperatures above 35C for consecutive days. Elderly residents, who make up a large share of Venice's shrinking population, are considered especially vulnerable.
