Veneto's drought emergency signals water stress across the Adriatic north

Italy's northeastern Veneto region declared a state of emergency Thursday due to drought, with rainfall from January to May running more than 25 percent below the previous year. The Local Italy reported the declaration came as the Po River Authority (ADBPO) warned that several major waterways in northern Italy are in a "critical state," with weather forecasts offering little relief in the coming days. The twin warnings signal that water stress, which dominated Italian headlines during the 2024-2025 winter, has not abated but intensified as summer heat deepens the deficit.

The crisis extends beyond Veneto's borders and touches the entire Adriatic north. The Po, Italy's longest river and the lifeblood of the northern plains, has run critically low in summer months before, but the persistent deficit—now spanning more than half a year—suggests that the underlying water balance has shifted. The ADBPO's assessment that multiple waterways face "critical" conditions points to a broader hydrological stress that threatens not only agriculture but also the industrial water supplies that support manufacturing districts across the region, including parts of Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy.
