Naples suburb seizes umbrellas in dawn raid on beach 'cheaters'

The Guardian reported that authorities in Torre del Greco, a coastal suburb of Naples, seized umbrellas, loungers and deck chairs during a dawn sweep of a beach on Tuesday. The operation targeted what the paper described as a growing trend of people attempting to reserve spots on the public shoreline by leaving equipment in place overnight.

The crackdown comes during the peak of the Italian summer, when competition for space on Campania's beaches is at its fiercest. The Guardian noted that the practice, sometimes called 'ombrellone cheating', has become a flashpoint between residents and authorities struggling to manage overcrowded public bathing areas.
