Schengen suspension with Spain leaves Veneto travellers in limbo

Italy has temporarily suspended its Schengen free-travel pact with Spain after tens of thousands of migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, the BBC reported on Friday.

The measure will affect people travelling by plane or boat between the two countries, according to the Guardian's live coverage of the crisis.

For Veneto, the suspension lands at the peak of the summer season, when Marco Polo airport in Venice and the region's Adriatic ports are busy with holiday traffic to Spanish destinations.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called the temporary suspension a "necessary choice" in comments reported by Politico Europe.
