Europe's wildfires expose Alpine single-road vulnerability

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated across France, Spain and Italy this week as forest fires continue to burn out of control, Deutsche Welle reported. In southern France, a single access road has hampered mass evacuations, CNN reported on Friday, as firefighters struggle to contain blazes that have consumed thousands of hectares.

The European wildfire season has arrived earlier and with greater intensity than in recent years, a trend that The Guardian's editorial board described as evidence that "the quickening pace of global heating has never been clearer." The newspaper warned that climate policies across the continent are being deprioritised even as the fire risk grows.

For the Alpine valleys of Italy's northern border regions, the pattern of fires concentrated in the south and west offers a reprieve this season — but the structural vulnerability is shared. Valle d'Aosta's main artery, the A5 motorway and its connecting valley roads, remain the sole egress for most of the region's 123,000 residents and tens of thousands of summer tourists.
