Permafrost across the Mont Blanc massif and surrounding Alpine peaks is melting faster than climate models predicted, according to findings released this week by research teams from France's Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris and Switzerland's ETH Zurich. The thaw has accelerated markedly over the past three years, with ground temperatures at high altitude rising well above historical norms as European summer heat intensifies. Scientists now warn that some sections of permanently frozen ground above 3,500 metres may be irreversibly destabilised within a decade.
The Valle d'Aosta, which sits at the heart of the Alps' highest terrain, faces direct consequences. Mountain huts, cable car stations and hiking trails built on permafrost foundations are already showing signs of structural stress, according to reports from Alpine guides and tourism operators cited by international climbing and mountaineering media. The region's cross-border access routes—particularly the Mont Blanc tunnel and mountain passes—depend on geological stability that permafrost loss threatens to compromise. Local authorities have begun monitoring ground stability at critical infrastructure sites, though the scale of the problem remains uncertain.
