Record-breaking heatwave set to return to Alps as summer intensifies

After a brief respite, dangerous heat is set to return to Italy from Wednesday, with forecasters warning of record-breaking summer temperatures, according to The Local Italy. The renewed heatwave follows an intense heat episode in late June that experts have ranked among the worst European heatwaves on record, rivalling the catastrophic 2003 event. The Trentino-Alto Adige region, despite its Alpine elevation and cooler valleys, faces mounting pressure from sustained high temperatures that threaten water supplies, agriculture and tourism infrastructure.

The Alpine region is particularly vulnerable to prolonged heat because of its dependence on seasonal snowmelt and hydroelectric generation. Earlier this summer, northern Italy's rivers, including tributaries that feed the region's power system, reached critical drought levels as early-season heat dried mountain sources faster than normal. The return of extreme temperatures compounds these pressures and raises questions about water availability for the region's apple and wine production, which depend on reliable irrigation during growing season.
